Our “Brand”

Criminologists are frustrated. We conduct research, we publish research, we teach our classes. Years and decades go by. Then we turn on the TV and WOW! It’s like nobody ever heard about any of it. So much chatter, so many platitudes, so little substance. Does anybody even know that there are many police practices that have been submitted to empirical evaluation? Did you know that when you hear “violent crime is bad right now,” it might not be true, and you can actually look it up? We read our students’ papers and we see that in the age of the Internet, it’s getting harder for them to find good information. There is just too much “information” to sift through. The untutored Internet user would find it nearly impossible to figure out what information is reliable. We want to help. Don’t just “google it”–we’ll direct you to reliable information. Although we use this forum to speak in our own voices, rather than hemming ourselves in with “scholarly style”, all content on these pages is submitted by or vetted by social scientists, albeit frustrated ones. . . .
